Filipinos are naturally compassionate. When we see a helpless, crying baby, our first instinct is to help. But what if that act of kindness became your greatest regret? What if the child you were rescuing was actually a predator in disguise?
This terrifying twist is what made Tiyanak (1988) an unforgettable film that carved its name deep into Filipino horror. Here are 5 haunting moments from the movie that continue to send shivers down viewers' spines.
1. Tiyanak hides in a baby’s cry
While walking through a forest, a couple hears a baby crying. They split up to investigate, and the wife discovers an infant wrapped in a bundle. The moment she picks it up, the baby transforms: its face turns demonic, its eyes glow red, and sharp claws and fangs appear. The creature savagely attacks her. Her husband later finds her bloody body, realizing too late the deadly trap they walked into.
2. Julie’s deadly gift
Julie, who has suffered the loss of two babies, is overjoyed when her sister finds an abandoned infant. Believing the child is a gift from God, she places it in a cradle and decides to adopt it. Her grandmother warns her that the baby is a Tiyanak, but Julie refuses to listen. The creature uses her compassionate heart to its advantage, maintaining an angelic guise around her while defending its position.
3. Monica’s terrifying escape
Hearing a baby cry inside a room, Monica picks it up—only for it to transform and bite her. She barely escapes with her life. When adults dismiss her story as the work of criminals, Monica teams up with Niniko and Aries. They consult a local medicine woman who reveals the creature's weakness: to destroy the Tiyanak, they must burn its shed skin, which it relies on to survive and transform.
4. Nursery nightmare
Julie’s sister, Christie, brings the baby to a hospital for safety. While unattended, the creature disappears and begins crawling through a nursery filled with newborn babies. The Tiyanak moves with shocking speed, leaping and throwing nurses across the room. Christie watches in horror as the demon slays the staff. She warns Julie, but her sister accuses her of going crazy. Fortunately, Monica and her friends step in to share how the monster can be defeated.
5. Ending the monster baby’s Reign
Julie attempts to have the baby baptized. When men arrive suspecting the infant is a Tiyanak, she flees to a movie theater to protect it. While Julie falls asleep, the creature attacks, killing audience members in a wave of chaos. Bullets fail to stop it, and the Tiyanak escapes to Julie’s house.
Christie rushes home to meet Monica, Niniko, and Aries. Together, they corner the creature, locate its shed skin, and set it ablaze—destroying the Tiyanak once and for all.
